Abstract: On the occasion of the th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Luigi Ciamician (–) this article summarizes the life and career of this Italian-Armenian founder of green chemistry with emphasis on his work on pyrroles, plant chemistry, photochemistry, solar energy, the environment, and politics. Ciamician was one of the founders of photochemistry, making the first systematic study of the behavior of organic compounds toward light.
